Cygwin is a collection of libraries and tools which create a Unix like environment for Windows. Cygwin/X is a port of the X Window System to Microsoft Windows, built on Cygwin.
Run setup.exe, you will see the welcome screen. Click Next to continue.
Choose, “Install from Internet” followed by Next to proceed to the next screen.
The default Install Root is c:\cygwin which should be fine for most installations. Click Next to continue.
Local Package Directory should default to the directory that you ran setup.exe from. Click Next to continue.
The target directory will typically not exist and must be created. Click Yes to continue.
Choose “Direct Connection” as a campus mirror of the Cygwin repository will be used. Click Next to continue.
The next window gives the opportunity to select a mirror for downloading. Enter http://ftp.up.ac.za/mirrors/cygwin in the “User URL” field and click on Add to add the UP mirror URL to the list. Click Next to continue.
Setup will download a list of available packages as it moves to the next screen. The next screen allows one to select the packages that will be downloaded and installed. A listing of the Cygwin/X packages is given below and these packages should be selected by clicking on Skip to change the mode and a version number will be displayed. Cygwin/X packages are located in the X11 category and the following should be selected:
xorg-server (the Cygwin/X X Server)
xinit (scripts for starting the X server: xinit, startx, startwin (and a shortcut on the Start Menu to run it), startxdmcp.bat )
X-start-menu-icons (adds icons for X Clients to the Start menu)
You may also select any X client programs you want to use, and any fonts you would like to have available.
As the X server depends on a number of other packages, you will next see a window confirming that all dependencies should also be downloaded. Click Next to continue.
Click Next to begin the download process. You should see messages such as the following during the download process. After the packages are downloaded, setup will automatically begin to install them.
The last window gives the option to create Desktop and Start Menu icons, which is recommeded as this simplfies starting the Cygwin environment. Click Finish to close the setup program.
