The following information is only relevant to staff and selected postgraduate
students as these will be the only ones that will have the necessary access.
The official policy is that only EECE staff members (including TA's, but excluding all undergrad and postgraduate students) may use the network printers. With special permission (and sponsorship by a staff member or research group), certain postgraduate students may use the network printers. Staff members / TAs can contact the Departmental IT Administrator to obtain the necessary access. Postgraduate students must request their sponsor / promoter to send a request to Mr PC Poley (Admin manager).
Access to the printers is controlled via a departmental IPP based print server. Since the printers are not directly accessible (on a VLAN), this is the only way to print to the printers.
In order to make use of this service, you need the following:
A print username and a working password. These will be supplied by the Departmental IT Administrator once your access has been vetted.
Before attempting to connect to the printers, please download and unpack the required printer drivers. The drivers for the printers are downloadable from the department FTP server:
Ensure that you have obtain the necessary username / password from the Departmental IT Administrator.
Click on the Windows icon (Start) and select “Devices and Printers”. The devices and printers control panel should appear.
Click on the window background and select “Add Printer” from the menu. In the Add Printer window, select “Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer”.
The system will now try to find printers on the network. Click on stop to halt the automatic printer detection. Click on “The printer that I want isn't listed” to add the EECE printers.
The iPrint client will now display an authentication popup window. Enter the username and password supplied by the Departmental IT Administrator (all printers use the same username / password). Tick the “Remember my password” option to avoid having to reenter your username / password for every print job.
After a delay while the system is interrogating the print server, a window should appear requesting the printer driver be specified. Click on “Have Disk…”
Now click on “Browse” and navigate to the directory where the print driver was unpacked / installed.
Depending on the type of driver, a window may now be displayed requesting which variation of the base printer type is to be used. For example, the next window will appear when adding the EECE copier.
Finally a window will appear indicating that the printer was successfully added.
Repeat the process for the other printers (network-printer, colour-printer, etc.)
PLEASE CHECK THAT THE PAPER SIZE (under device settings) IS SET TO A4 (for all trays).
