The Intelligent Systems Group (ISG) specialises in the theory and application
of systems that perceive, reason, learn, and act intelligently. The aim of the
group is to create real-world intelligent systems applicable in the South
African context.
Amongst other, the following knowledge fields form the theoretical basis of
the group's activities: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning,
Bayesian Methods, Data Fusion, Digital Image Processing,
Digital Signal Processing, Computer Vision, Communication Systems,
Control Systems, Embedded Systems, Parallel Processing,
Pattern Recognition, Robotics, Real-Time Systems.
The primary focus areas of the group currently are:
Prospective students interested in the research areas of the ISG should read
about the departmental graduate admission
requirements and process. Note that in order to apply for admission to the
Masters program (MEng), a BEng(Hons) degree is required. The BEng(Hons) degree
is a 1 year postgraduate degree (full-time) subsequent to a 4 year BEng
degree. Upon the completion of the BEng(Hons) degree, the student can then
continue postgraduate studies in the form of research based MEng and PhD
degrees.
Postgraduate studies therefore typically begins with a 1 year full-time
BEng(Hons) degree, which entails coursework consisting of four 32 credit
modules. In order to support the progression to Masters, a fixed Honours
curriculum is prescribed for students of the ISG that is optimised to lead
naturally into Masters research. Effectively the curriculum incorporates the
majority of background and preparatory work required for a Masters and allows
the student to focus exclusively on the research component during the Masters.
The goal of the tight integration between the Honours and Masters is to allow
full-time students to complete both degrees within a two year time-frame.
The prescribed Honours modules are:
If you wish to join the research group and comply with the admission
requirements, please contact the group leader (Mr H
Grobler) for more information and to discuss the opportunities available.
